We’re always pleased to take a closer look at the air purifiers made by the Guardian Technologies – and that’s exactly what we did with their newest (and already very popular) model – the GermGuardian AC5000. Just like many other air purifiers, this one has also been designed to eliminate the contaminants from the air of your room, and it certainly does its job well. Its high effectiveness is provided by the presence of powerful filters that remove mold, dust, and allergens as efficiently as possible, making breathing easy, just like it should be.
One other reason that made us test this model is the fact that it comes at a very reasonable price – it’s an ideal choice for the people with a lower budget. Let’s have a more in-depth look!
Features and Technology
The GermGuardian AC5000 can serve the area that’s up to 193 square feet in size and should be quite effective in rooms of small to medium size. It comes with various perks, features, and functions – let’s have a look at the most important of them:
Even though it comes at an affordable price, the GermGaurdian still looks quite attractive and immediately catches the eye with its looks – we could even say that it looks a bit futuristic. Unfortunately, unlike with the more expensive models, you can’t choose the color, as the GermGuardian comes only in the combination of silver and black.
The Three-level Filtration System
Like the name of the model suggests, this air purifier comes with three levels of filtration, targeting a pretty wide spectrum of all sorts of airborne pollutants. These nasty particles will go through the pre-filter (which will capture the largest bits), then through the charcoal filter (which reduces the odors), and finally through the well-known HEPA filter (which captures almost 100% of the microscopic particles).
The Filter With Activated Carbon
The GermGuardian AC5000 has a layer of activated carbon on its pre-filter, which is there to reduce the odors.
This is an essential part of the device, as the HEPA filter can’t really fight against the odors – but the activated carbon, which is a very unique material with a porous structure, can tackle the bad smells with ease.
The true HEPA filter
The HEPA filter that comes with this air purifier is its most advertised component, and with a reason. HEPA is an acronym for High Efficiency Particulate Arresting, and this name says it all – this kind of filter is there to eliminate the majority of the airborne pollutants from your house by capturing them with millions of delicate fibers. To earn the title of HEPA, a filter has to be able to remove at least 99.97% of the particles that are bigger than 0.3 microns – and the one in the GermGuardian AC5000 can certainly do that.
The UV-C Air Sanitizer
Another great thing about the GermGuardian AC5000 is the implementation of the ultraviolet light technology, which represents the final step of the whole filtration process that we’ve mentioned. The manufacturer claims that the UV-C air sanitizer can kill various viruses and bacteria, but we have to admit that it’s still quite debatable how efficient this is, as it still requires more scientific research. Fortunately, you can completely turn off this feature if you want.
Other Features of The Unit
Fortunately, this air purifier is lightweight and portable, and it’s very easy to move it around thanks to the built-in handle that’s situated on the top of the unit.
When it comes to controls, they are quite easy to operate. There are three fan speeds here – high, medium, and low, and there’s also the indicator light on the top of the device that tells you if the GermGuardian is on or off. The power light will also tell you if it’s the time to change the filter, and this can be done without any additional tools. However, changing the UV-C light will require the use of a screwdriver.
When it comes to energy consumption, this air purifier uses 55 watts when it’s running at the highest speed setting of the fan. And when it comes to CADR (which stands for Clean Air Delivery Rate), the unit has the CADR of 125 (for the tobacco smoke). The 450 is the biggest possible rating, which means that the more expensive units will, obviously, be much more efficient and be able to clean more air for less time. But they’re nowhere near as affordable as this model!
We should also mention the dimensions – the GermGuardian AC5000 is 28″ high, 7″ wide, and 10.2″ long, and weighs close to 10 pounds. This puts it into the category of lightweight air purifiers, making it very easy to relocate when needed.
For the price you can get it at, the GermGuardian is certainly an outstanding machine. It brings a ton of features for an affordable price – like the true HEPA filter or the layer of activated carbon – you won’t find another device at this price that has these features.
It’s an excellent choice for the people who live in areas with low air quality, but it’s not the best possible option if you’d like to have an air purifier that’s designed specifically for the smoke removal. Yes, it has the activated carbon filter, but there’s not enough carbon in it to cope with large amounts of smoke.
What is Wrong with the Product?
Its UV indicator emits a light that’s way too bright, and can be really annoying during the night – you will have to cover it with something. There is no operational timer which would be a good thing to set your air purifier to automatically turn on and off during the day. And lastly, we didn’t like to lack of the remote control, which means that you’ll have to get up every time you want to change the fan speed.
It’s not surprising that this air purifier is among the best-sellers – it brings some pretty useful features at a really affordable price, easily beating the competitors in its price range. And even though it certainly isn’t the greatest solution for the air pollutants in your room, it’s still the best choice out there if your budget isn’t that big. We recommend it!
